The Power of Complimenting

Updated: Jun 19, 2025

How often do you compliment others? If this a question that cannot be easily answered or if you have to think a lot before saying "yes", it definitely means you need to start complimenting or celebrating people as part of your daily routine.

Look around and you will find endless reasons to compliment and appreciate others. Complimenting others is also a very easy activity and has direct impact on reducing one's ego level. Therefore, complimenting others should be part of one's daily routine.

1st March is celebrated every year as World Compliment Day to remind us of this beautiful act of complimenting that we have neglected in our busy lives.

Also, if you celebrate only your achievements or the achievements of your family and friends, this is not real or complete celebration. Real celebration means when one celebrates or appreciates others (whether they are part of one's family, friends, colleagues, or strangers) for even the smallest things done by them.

A simple example is when you are passing a busy street, and you see a traffic policeman trying his best to control the traffic. Celebrate his hard work by waving your hand in appreciation to thank him and his efforts, which will definitely bring a smile on his face.

When someone compliments, it boosts happiness, brings countless benefits, and most importantly, creates an aura of positive energy for both the one giving the compliment and the one receiving it.

This is the simplest act of kindness and recognition that anyone can share anywhere without much effort. However, we choose to use our voice and actions to complain about small things or gossip about others rather than using our precious time in complimenting and appreciating others.

Indra Nooyi, ex-CEO of Pepsico wrote personal letters to the parents of her senior executives to show them gratitude. She also used to write letters to the employees. There are many such leaders across the world who have been great ambassadors of kindness and generosity for mankind.

Sthitapragyadiaries encourages its readers to compliment as many people as possible on a daily basis through words, behaviour, written messages or texts, liking social media posts, or even sending appreciation emails. Start with your family, friends, colleagues, helpers, support staff and everyone that you see around you. Yes, it becomes everyone's duty to embrace a simple yet powerful principle of 'Complimenting daily'.

According to Hans Poortvliet, "Nothing stimulates more, gives more energy, makes people happier and, as far as business is concerned increases productivity and commitment faster than sincere appreciation."

Let’s make complimenting a part of our daily life and celebrate the beauty in others and actions of others, every single day. This small change will help in creating better homes, families, workplaces, societies, nations and finally our Earth.
